Being Human

Being Human CastFeeling Normal

S

o there's a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf...

Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, right?

:-)

Anyway, one of SyFy's new shows is Being Human. A vampire & a werewolf move into a house inhabited by the ghost of a chick who died 6 months previously. The vamp & his buddy move in to try to act like normal human beings and keep each other from "falling off the wagon" and killing people.

After they move in, they are surprised to find the ghost of an oddly "perky" ghost who is surprised that they can see her (since no one else can).

This is only the second show, but it's aight so far.

I mean, I'm not a Twilight fan. I watched the first movie because it was at the library & I rented it for free, but I haven't read any of the books and have no desire to see any of the other movies.

Cast of Being HumanBeing Human capitalizes on the current vampire/werewolf craze in a way that Moonlight was unable to do. Also, this is on SyFy, which means that it will be given more than a few episodes to gain a fan base.

If you're too old for Twilight & too young for Bela Lugosi movies, you might enjoy this series. It's on SyFy on Mondays @ 9/8c.

In other news, I got a catalog in the mail today. I never get catalogs. Only the usual store circulars & Domino's coupons. But this is a catalog for Nerds!

O.M.Actual.G!!!!!!!!!

In addition to Unicorn Meat in a can, the ThinkGeek 8-bit tie and Space Gun LED Key Ring, there's baconnaise (bacon flavored Mayo), bacon scented candles, a talking bacon plushie & all kinds of other bacon shit! (Did you know there was bacon flavored hot sauce? I didn't) Wheeeeeeeee. I'm ordering the Baconnaise & possibly the bacon flavored pop-corn. (There's bacon salt too.) OMG. I feel the clogged arteries already, LOL.

We don't get actual bacon much because it's too expensive to keep in the house with The Boy who can go through a 24 pack of hot dogs in a week.

Hmmmm, I can get a Sonic Screwdriver like the 10th or 11th Doctor. :-) Since I haven't seen the 11th Doctor, I'll stick with the 10th. I think it can be an actual screwdriver or you can get one that's an ink pen.

Bazinga ShirtI think I got on their mailing list when I ordered my Bazinga Shirt for X-mas. Whatevs. I like it. :-)

Warehouse 13 on SyFy

Feeling Normal

T

his week started a new crop of tv shows (I can't tell you how thrilled I am that Eureka is back.) One of the new shows was Warehouse 13.

It was a 2 hour premier. I think I fell asleep trying to watch it 3 times, which made me think I was going to hate it. Or, at least, not like it very much.

But to be fair, I finally watched it yesterday, when I wasn't sleepy, LOL.

It reminded me of X-files. Seriously. The guy who is open to everything and thinks "the truth is out there" and the woman/his new partner who is strictly by the rules and thinks the guy is a little...prone to flights of fancy.

Anyway, I did like watching this newer version of Scully & Mulder. :-)

The show is about 2 Secret Service agents who are reassigned to Warehouse 13. Their new jobs are to track down "objects" that might be harmful in the world if they are allowed to remain outside with the populace.

I think if you liked X-Files, you will like this.I thought it was interesting that they said things like "This vehicle is powered by your internal electricity. Henry Ford built it before the car, but the car company decided that they'd make more money with something that broke down & would be replaced" (Not an exact quote, but you get the gist.)

They mentioned Tesla & a few other scientists I've heard of from movies (like The Prestige) or real life. It always makes it more believable if the "great minds" people talk about are actual great minds and not fictional characters, don't you think?

Whatever.

I think if you liked X-Files, you will like this.

Tuesdays @ 9 EST on SyFy (formerly Sci-Fi).

That is all.

Eureka Premiers Tonight!

I

have been sleeping through watching the marathon on SciFi all day today!

If you've never seen Eureka before, it's a show about a single dad (16? year old daughter) who is Sheriff of a little known town (I think it's in Oregon?) where all the smartest scientists live & work. Crazy things happen all the time and watching Sheriff Jack Carter figure out those mysteries with his relatively low IQ of 111 (in comparison to the other citizens of Eureka) is hilarious! Looking at Colin Ferguson is an added bonus. :-)

Check it out! New episodes are Mondays at 9 pm EST.

The Invasion

W

hen I went to Wal-Mart the last time, I made up my mind to only buy one movie. It was between "The Brave One" with Jodie Foster, "Braveheart" with Mel Gibson, "Shoot 'em Up" with Clive Owen and "Invasion" with Nicole Kidman.

I like Jodie Foster movies, for the most part. I wasn't particularly fond of "Nell" or the one she did with Mel Gibson...Maverick? I like Mel Gibson movies. I LOVED Braveheart. I have it on VHS. I just really wanted to see something different. Something that I'd never seen before.

I won't make you read through my entire thought process, but I settled on "Invasion". Obviously.

It was good. Once again, I was afraid I might not find it worth the $13, but I usually end up liking a lot of Nicole Kidman movies that I only watched because it was during one of those free premium channel cable weekends (Like "The Others". That movie was awesome!).

I hate her fake American accent. Some people can get away with it. But other actors slip back to their native accent when they're being emotional.

Whatever.

The story is about a US Space Shuttle that crashes back on earth and then people start getting a strange form of the 'Flu'.

Apparently, it was a remake (of sorts) of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". I never saw that, so I can't say.

I can say that you probably know the story. People get infected, they start changing & Dr. Carol Bennell (Kidman) tries to save herself and her son from being infected.

Photos from IMDb. Click to enlarge.

*sigh*

I liked the movie. It's worth a rent. But I really don't feel like talking about it anymore.

There's a Dr. Who marathon on Sci-Fi right now and I have a lot of episodes to watch on DVR.

Bye!

Jumper

Jumper DVD

Y

ou may have heard some things about this movie which make you think it won't be any good. I know I did. I was nervous to buy it. All I knew about it was that Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) was in it and he could basically teleport.

But it is so much more than that. I didn't know Samuel L. Jackson was in it. It was a different kind of role (IMO) for him. He played Roland. One of the "religious freaks" known as Paladins. Roland wants to kill all Jumpers because Paladins believe that only God should have the power to be all places at once.

The movie starts with a young teenager named David Rice. He is bullied (I guess) in school. One day, he wants to give his crush, Millie Harris, a gift (a snow globe that he found at a yard sale). The main HS bully snatches the gift from Millie and throws it onto a frozen lake. David walks out onto the ice to get it. He stands there just long enough to fall through the ice.Samuel L Jackson

Look, this movie requires some suspension of disbelief. I have watched "Ice Road Truckers". I know that the last thing you want to do on top of a frozen lake is stop. He should have gotten the freaking snow globe and gone back to the bank. But then there would have been no movie, LOL.

So while he's in the freezing lake, he somehow transports himself to the middle of the city library. Water and all.

Scene from JumperThen he goes home to his drunk father. Apparently, his dad beats up on him too because he has a serious chain on his bedroom door to keep his father out of his room.

His dad asks him why he's wet and he says something like "Oh, some kids from school..." then he goes into his room and chains it up. His dad comes upstairs to get more of an answer and David won't open the door. When his father is about to break into the room, he transports himself back to the library out of fear.

After that, he realizes that he doesn't have to stay in Nowhere, Rhode Island (or wherever he is) and he starts robbing banks (by Jumping himself into the vaults) to finance his new life. He goes to England to pick up chicks, he Jumps to the ocean to surf, he eats lunch on top of a sphinx's head in Egypt.

All of it is pretty fun to watch. Made me wonder what I would do if I had that kind of power.

Sam Jackson in JumperOne day he finally gets the courage to go back to his hometown to seek out Millie. Everyone else in town had thought that he was dead because he never came back after falling through the ice. He did, however, leave the snow globe on a bench in Millie's back yard so that she knew he was alive.

He runs into the old HS bully and Jumps him inside a bank vault.

Payback.

But the bully meets Roland & spills the beans. So while David is taking Millie to Rome to see all the sites that she had wanted to see in HS, Roland is trying to find him and kill him.

Rent the movie. As I said, Evan watched it about 30 times since the day we bought it. I watched it with him half of those times and didn't mind listening to it while I dropped cards or whatever the other half of the time.

I liked it a lot. I like the way that just because he had this "super power", he didn't try to be a Super Hero. He did what I think any of us would do. Exactly what he wanted. He had fun with it.

The only reason I say Rent the movie instead of Buy the movie is because you might not like it as much as we did. But the special effects were not overdone. I like the way they made Jumping look. There are some cool & funny action scenes when another Jumper is jumping a car through traffic at high speed.

2 snaps up with a bootie smack. Or something. Whatever. Watch it!

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

T

he other day at Wal-Mart, we got "Semi-Pro" with Will Ferrell (funny, but not as funny as Talladega Nights) and I wanted Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

I like Sci-Fi movies as long as they aren't produced by the Sci-Fi Network. All of those movies are cheesy & I only watch them when I've watched everything on my DVR and I don't feel like watching a "real" movie.

Of course, I've seen Jekyll/Hyde in "A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Van Helsing", but this one didn't seem like it would be quite the same. For one thing, Hyde isn't gigantic. It's just a change in personality and mannerisms. Hyde is like... a homicidal Jack Sparrow, LOL.

I fell asleep the first time I tried watching it. But in defense of the movie, I had been up since 4 am that day. We had gone to the post office & Wal-Mart & done something else that required me to do more than lay on my bed or sit in this chair so I was tired.

I finally watched it last night.

It was good!

I like Dougray Scott. I remembered his face from somewhere, but I had to go to imdb.com to find out exactly where. He was Susan's BF on Desperate Housewives and he was Thandie Newton's Ex in Mission Impossible 2.

Anyway, the writer gave the Jekyll/Hyde story a different spin. He explained WHY Jekyll was doing those experiments. Dr. Jekyll had visited Africa or somewhere and met a witch doctor who said that a particular flower induced an altered state. Jekyll's interest was the possible connection between this 'other' personality and illness.

After there have been a few unsolved murders in the city, Dr. Jekyll thinks that he might have done them. He asks his closest friend, played by Tom Skerritt, to recommend a lawyer for him. Jekyll goes to her & confesses to the murders and says he wants to plead guilty and be sentenced right away with no trial.

So, of course, she just think Dr. Jekyll is crazy and doesn't believe his story without doing some investigation & research about multiple personalities.

One thing we find out in the story is that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have different DNA.

Yeah.

Same body, different DNA to go with the different personalities.

Yes, the ending was predictable, but I enjoyed the ride anyway. It's more interesting than any of the slasher flicks and most of the crap that is supposed to pass for "thrillers" these days. The only thing that sucked is that there are no captions. Not on the DVD, and the captions on my TV wouldn't work either. But you might hear better than I do, so that might not bother you.

Definitely rent it. :-)
