I can't give you an honest answer/opinion on your walmart episode because it is my goal to always agree with you in everything you do.
ReplyDelete---------
Why can't I find your email now? I was going to write you about death. It isn't on my auto thingy anymore.
Probably some black guy broke into my home and erased your email from my computer. That would be the conclusion I would jump to.
:)
Settle down baby. Remain calm. Think puffy pink thoughts.
Not being there with you, I must take your word for what happened. If we analyze the incident, we arrive at these facts:
ReplyDelete1. You owned your place in line. I think anyone would agree with you on that.
2. The cashier was of genuine Wal-mart caliber as to education and other job skills.
3. Something might have happened just before you arrived in line that you didn't know about. Such as the parents telling their daughter to run and get something they forgot. But this is none of your business and you are not a mind reader, so it shouldn't affect your place in line if she comes back and you are already there.
4. In my mind, I see a cashier without a whole lot of common sense, common courtesy, and life skills in general who didn't get the upbringing you did, working at perhaps the only place that would hire a person like her, who will probably soon be looking for another job with similar skill requirements.
5. What I DON'T see is this automatic feeling that her actions were racist rather than being simply stupid and Wal-mart like. But sometimes our first gut reactions are correct, so you may be right. I wasn't there to receive the "vibes" she was giving off to you. Maybe, having lived through the 1960s, maybe I just don't want to believe your generation hasn't got that bullshit worked out of it's system yet.
Please remember there was a time when some people didn't get waited on no matter HOW long they waited in line. (I don't know exactly what that should mean to you, but it seems worthy of remembering.)
Finally, please forgive my jerky attempt at humor, above, by saying a black man must have broken into my house. I was only trying to make the point that it is silly and hurtful to jump to stereotypical conclusions about race.
I care about you, so she damn well better NOT have been acting racist to you.
